CEOE Vocal/General Music Test
The CEOE Vocal/General Music Test addresses a number of aspects of music. Music theory, performance, listening, history, culture, and interdisciplinary understanding are all tested. Multiple-choice is the most common question type (80 questions worth 85 percent of total score); however, there is also a constructed-response section, for which an essay will be required (one prompt worth 15 percent of total score).
The test covers the following areas:
- Theory - notation, melody, chord structure, harmonic function, compositional forms and techniques, evaluation of musical works
- Performance - singing, accompaniment, choral, ensemble, conducting
- Listening skills - a recording will be played, upon which the questions and answers will be based; exercises include identifying historical/cultural context, identifying musical elements, identifying errors
- Music history and culture - world music, specifically from Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia
- Music and other disciplines - music education, relationships between music and culture/other art forms, relationships between music and other disciplines
