The CEOE Middle Level English Test reviews English knowledge and expertise in oral/visual communication, writing, reading, and literature. The test contains a multiple-choice section (85 percent) and a writing exercise (15 percent). The writing exercise tests literature knowledge.
To prepare for the oral/visual communication questions, know listening/speaking, visual media and presentation strategies, as well as how to apply those strategies.
For the writing questions, study modern English conventions; the elements of composition; and the writing process for description, information, explanation, persuasion, instruction, expression, interaction, and critical analysis.
Reading questions cover phonological awareness, strategies for word identification, how to develop comprehension skills, and particular texts (see writing for types).
Regarding literature, the test requires knowledge of how to read particular genres (fiction, drama, nonfiction, and poetry), world literary history, and how literature shapes and is shaped by society.
