There are two sections on the CEOE Instrumental/General Music Test: a multiple-choice section and a constructed-response section. Both are based on knowledge of music theory and performance, world history, culture and the relationships between music and other disciplines, as well as an understanding of listening skills.
For music theory, know notation, chord structures, melody, composition and evaluation of performance/composition. For performance, understand the various instruments, as well as group performance and conducting. Listening skills entail knowledge of musical recordings, their context, elements, and possible pitch and rhythmic errors. In addition, a general knowledge of music, its functions, and purposes is required, as well as techniques in music education, and the relationship between music and culture and between music and other disciplines.
The multiple-choice component of the CEOE Instrumental/General Music Test is worth 85 percent, whereas the constructed response is worth 15 percent.
