CEOE English as a Second Language Test
Consisting primarily of multiple-choice questions (85 percent of total grade), the CEOE English as a Second Language Test requires understanding of the following five areas:
- Language/language learning - linguistics, as related to language development, theories of second-language learning, variables affecting second-language learning and their application
- Culture - nature of culture (research, principles, concepts, theories), role of culture in language acquisition, diverse cultural groups, teaching strategies for diverse cultural groups
- Planning, implementing, and managing ESL instruction - standards-based instruction (concepts, research, best practices), resources (location, development, adaptation, utility), oral language, literacy development, and content-area knowledge/skills (concepts, research, best practices)
- Assessment - types used in ESL programs (purposes, use, limitations), selection, interpretation
- Professionalism - history and research of ESL programs, professional growth opportunities, serving as a resource for colleagues, serving as a liaison/advocate for ESL students
The CEOE English as a Second Language Test also has an essay (15 percent) on the topic of assessment.
